You were mid tournament in the champions league and your club had made the cut. It wasn’t like you were bad, but you were not playing our best as so many of our key players were out due to injury. You had told Ruesha to hold your seat in the bus, as you sprinted towards the hotel lobby. The tape was with Leah, and you saw her earlier going to her room so you got convinced that she was there. “fuck” you mumbled after waiting for the elevator for 15 seconds. You decided on sprinting the stairs for the full 4 floors, not giving a damn about your previously teared acl. You got up looking red as ever, and started desperately banging on Leah’s door. “LEAH!! I NEED MY TAPE!!” You could hear someone inside, but she didn’t open. “Jesus Christ” you mumbled as you started kicking the door frantically. “LEAH, I SWEAR! OPEN UP, I NEED MY TAPE!!” You yelled as the door swung open. Your eyes widened and your jaw dropped. You were out of air and of words. Your brain was imprinting this image that you didn’t need to see at all. You saw Leah standing there butt naked behind a tiny towel around her waist with her hair going in all directions and when you looked into the room, you saw Caitlin Foord also naked.

She handed you your tape. “Here..” she said as she shut the door in your face. The wind of the door hitting your face. Swifties love a visceral line! but I think if we give too much credence to the “what a shame she’s fucked in the head” interpretation of the breakup (which is what “they said” not what the singer says is true) we lose sight of everything the singer does tell us about what happened. he was on his knees and asked, and suddenly she knew the answer, and so she has to watch him go—the whole song is her watching him go in her mind’s eye.

the lyric we should pay more attention to: “I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends” and “but then you called, showed your hand, I turned around before I hit the tunnel”

the popular interpretation of this song is pretty much right on the money! the vulnerability of “I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends” is what it all comes back to—and I do think in the song it’s not only an anxious hope. he already showed his hand. they already moved on from Cornelia Street.

what I love about “Karma” is it’s not just reveling in the destruction of her enemies, it’s also saying comfortably “yeah I don’t have anything to worry about.” it’s the new years comic that’s like “how do you know the new year will bring flowers??” “‘cause I’m planting flowers.”
